18 September 2023: Dadel

When we recently scanned through a batch of waterhole camera trap photos, we spotted a familiar face: Dadel (EHF08722) with her easily recognisable arching back was captured strolling around one of the waterholes in the Etosha Heights Private Reserve. We use camera traps at waterholes to monitor priority species such as giraffe, elephant, rhino and lion to estimate abundance and density in the area. It is pretty amazing how much the quality of camera trap photos has improved in recent years. n the past we sometimes struggled to identify what species we were looking at. Now we can use these photos to identify individual animals – in this case Dadel. That is pretty cool!
